Green Loop — Large-Scale Waste Management
To address this issue PRESENT Architecture introduced the Green Loop plan, which is supposed to be a network along the city’s waterfront, a floating energy production center. The circular structure consist of street level composting facility, an elevated park, and barges and railways to efficiently transport the compost to other locations.
Trucks are sent millions of miles every year, creating traffic, noise pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. All of this so that our waste can be landfilled, where it then rots and creates even more greenhouse gas. It’s a big, dirty problem.
The proposal will create 10 hubs around the 520 miles coast in the city, a composting part that processing the organic waste (which is 30% of the residential waste stream) while adding 125 acre of public land. In the meanwhile reducing truck miles to landfill, decreasing traffic, noise and pollution which results in less greenhouse gas emission and therefore cleaner air.
The city would also benefit from the additional public park and nutrient rich compost made in NYC products for the market.
