Walter Knoll presents new Foster+Partners chair along new classics
Walter Knoll is undoubtedly one of the leading furniture manufacturers of our times (and most of the previous century as well), their collection featuring an outstanding, unique selection of top-notch designers. Their presentation at this year’s imm Cologne showcased not only the icons of the future, but some revived old classics as well. Regarding the contemporary section, they introduced a brand new armchair by well-renowned architecture office Foster + Partners.
The new item, named Foster 525 following Knoll’s habit of using serial numbers, is not the first joint project of the two companies. In 2009, they released together a backless leather chair, reflecting Foster’s adherence to constructivist, uncompromising, functional design ethos. The 2016 dining chair is built around the same idea of simple functionality with a twist. The whole seat is built around two slender panels, which work as the legs and also extend to form the armrests. This solution led to a naturally compact, sturdy look, the bright upholstery and curvaceous shape bringing in a sense of much needed lightness.
Besides the Foster collaboration, the imm presentation centred around the launch of the Walter Knoll’s Classic Editions range, which includes the updated versions of mid-century classics, mostly seating. The old yet freshened line was accomplished with some brand new additions like matching tables, so that Knoll can offer a comprehensive furniture collection for design-lovers in 2016 as well.
