SunCity installation presents Bulbo's plant-growing LED lights
Bulbo, a young Italian lighting studio introduced their line for the first time in the Netherlands during Dutch Design Week. They collaborated with Piet Hein Eek for a special showroom installation, that reaches well beyond the festival’s programme as it is open for the public until December. Leaving the installation to stretch through fall to the coldest months was crucial for this project, as it demonstrates how Bulbo’s LED lights, created for indoor gardening, perform in action.
The Italian start-up grew out of a research project, aiming to marry scientific findings, advanced LED technology, and exquisite design solutions. The members ended up with a decorative line of lighting structures, that foster the growth of vegetables, herbs, and flowers in times when there is a deficit in natural sunlight.
The kitchen garden project was made tangible with the demonstration at the Piet Hein Eek showroom. Under the name SunCity, a spectacular installation was set up with the use of old window glasses, two steel cabinets, PHE’s Crisis Table, Bulbo’s lights, and of course tons of plants. Amongst which we’ll find strawberries, aubergines, chilli pepper, and lettuce, all greens that are impossible to get fresh during this time of the year.
The structure also incorporates a vintage kitchen, allowing a chance to prepare the herbs on the spot. The pop-up greenhouse, while showcasing the latest Bulbo designs to be released in the coming months, creates a peculiar rural-futuristic landscape inside a designer showroom.
