Crystal-like lamp installation by SOFTLab for Melissa Shoes
Following the success of last year’s collaboration, multi-disciplinary studio SOFTLab once again created a stunning installation for Melissa Shoes. Set up in the brand’s Manhattan store, gigantic lamp-like structure echoes the aesthetics and characteristics shapes of the Winter 2015 collection. Entitled 'Star Walker', Melissa’s seasonal offerings operate with slightly futuristic, geometric shapes and iridescent materials.
This otherworldly, spheric atmosphere was revoked by a kaleidoscopic lantern. 50 unique cells and over 400 sections of custom-cut aluminum builds up its orderly asymmetric form. Its design follows the principles of crystal or soap bubble growth, hence the installation has an organic feel and looks as if it was grown on the spot. In fact, most of the assembling was done off-site, and those basic units were finally combined inside the store.
The crystal-allusions of the shape are further reinforced by the surface treatment of the base material: the dichroic acrylic causes interference in light depending on the viewing angle. Since it is lit from the inside, the structure changes colours depending the position of the customer, making a stroll around the store a real experience.
