Boutique student residence chain 'The Student Room' opens on new location
The Student Room’s latest outlet has recently been opened in Amsterdam City. Two years after the launch of the first hotel, which was followed by further openings in Rotterdam, The Hague, Paris, and Barcelona, the concept now returns to its native Amsterdam. The idea behind The Student Room is simple: to merge the luxuries of a boutique hotel with student housing. The hotels provide accommodation for exchange students, interns, researchers, and young professionals who spend a longer period in town and need the comfort of home while busy studying, and socialising. As such, besides the fully furnished rooms, the hotel offers shared kitchens, quiet study rooms, and plenty of communal spaces including a bar and a canteen. All the amenities serve the aim that residents can make the best out of this social, intellectual, and fun period of their lives.
Just like all the other members of The Student Room family, the central Amsterdam hotel was also designed by creative agency …,staat, who are responsible for the whole creative lead of the chain. Their interior is based on a concept of layers. The first one is the furniture itself, which takes direct inspiration from the average student residences where tenants bring their own stuff, leading to a mish-mash of furniture and home accessories. This eclecticism was reinterpreted by the blending of new, vintage, and modern designer furniture.
The second layer is a graphic one and is all about the walls. Instead of decorating with traditional paintings, a series of murals were directly composed on spot in the spirit of club-scene and street art. The result provides a colourful backdrop to the furnishings and balances out the strictness of the building’s coarse concrete frame.
The last, finishing layer is the addition of enlarged quotes, which not only signal the function of each space but provide constant inspiration and keep dwellers on the move both in the intellectual and physical sense. By now, The Student Room Amsterdam City offers rooms for full semesters, but is open for design-savy “flashpackers”, or ordinary travellers as well, who are young at heart and wish to re-experience a thrilling part of their lives in an extraordinary setting.
