TreeHotel, Harads Sweden
Stockholm based architecture firm Tham + Videgard Arkitekter created a magical tree hotel in Harads, a village close to the Arctic Circle. “The Tree Lover” tale by Jonas Selberg Augustsen, which tells the story of the connection between humans and trees, was the main inspiration for the architects. The moral of the story became the main objective during the design process: the architects aimed at creating a smooth transition between the natural environment and the hotel.
As a result, the structures melt into the surroundings. One of the lodgings is covered with an aluminum surface, which makes the structure almost invisible. Another, resembles a massive bird nest. The suspended structures seem like surreal works of nature and settled works of art rather than architectural structures.
The architects aimed at minimizing the carbon footprint and the impact on the surrounding wildlife. Therefore, all of the materials have been locally sourced.
Martin Videgard, the head designer described the project with the following words:’ It’s a mix of technology and wild nature. We were thinking about how human beings take lots of technical stuff with them when they set off out to explore uncultivated wild nature with harsh climates and extreme situations. So we wanted to avoid interfering, but to achieve that, we had to employ high-tech solutions.‘
