The Interrobang building woos Gangnam with its unusual volume
Korean architect Sae Min Oh and his architecture studio Bang by Min recently completed a development project in the city's upscale Gangnam district. Designed to resemble a three-dimensional street, the Interrobang building's unique volume is interspersed with indents and stairways. Serving mixed functions, the six-storey structure is intended to host shops, cafes and offices.
The project received this year's Seoul Achitecture Prize, thanks to its futuristic mass as well as its sensitivity to its surroundings. The stairways are designed to act as a vertical continuation of the street. "The vertical reconfiguration of various programmes occupying the street was an attempt to create a three-dimensional street that would revitalise small-scale culture," said Sae Min Oh to Dezeen.
The building's modern facade is dominated by concrete and stainless steel, with the former taking on a central role in the interior. The stairways and unusual angles continue to define the volume inside, creating a pared-down but nevertheless interesting atmosphere.
The small circular and rectangular windows cut into the side of the building allow ample natural light to filter in, while the main facades employ large glazed surfaces to fill the spaces with light. The lifts, staircases and other amenities are positioned as to maximize the building's rental potential.
