Spanish town Olot's new tourist info center relocated to former hospital
Taking local givens into consideration was crucial for the designing process: values of the landscape, history, and culture were all kept in mind to establish a space that reflects Olot’s identity and works well as a public space. The biggest gain was most definitely taking over the courtyard, as it has not only significant architectural value but as a thorough-passage place has a social role as well.
To achieve smooth traffic, two gates were opened to reach the courtyard and the offices. One is located on the corner, under the centuries-old majestic stairs of the hospital, thus this is what connects town, history, and the new info center. Its marked presence is justified by its essential location between the courtyard, tourist office, and market square.
The interior was perceived as a series of experiences that visitors go through: in the elongated space a sequence of functions follow each other. At the entrance, there is a self-service info point, followed by a relax and shop area, that finally leads to the offices through an audio-visual installation introducing the town. Materials are also typical of the locale, utilising volcanic clay and stone, complemented with oak and steel furniture by local craftsmen.
