Mikou Studio designs swimming pool of fluidity and openness
Swimming pools are usually not over-thought from a design point of view. When it is coming to sports, functionality and practicality are the key, and design is used to maintain motivation. Details suggesting movement, energy, and dynamism are characteristic of fitness halls and gyms for a good reason; different sports, however, require different atmospheric settings. For once, Mikou Studio decided to stress the calming character of active recreation, and designed a swimming pool and wellness center near Paris that oozes peace and harmony that it offers for the body and soul.
The core element is a 25 m long swimming pool, that is housed in a volume with 5 facades. The architects intended to bring as much natural light in as possible, so the bubble-shaped opening are repeated on the roof as well. The complex also includes a pool for leisure, a wellness section with a hammam and a sauna, and a fitness centre with weights room, squash courts, and the necessary supporting elements like changing rooms, cafeteria. A bonus service is the solarium, that includes two types: one regular on the inside, and one open-air one on the roof. This roof function and the main pool are interconnected by an indoor-outdoor ramp. The whole structure is characterised by the same spirit of fluidity and openness, the development of spaces emphasizing transparency and depth of field.
