Herzog & de Meuron design elegant new stadium for Bordeaux
Not a newbie to building stadiums, the architects this time wanted to create something extraordinary, but not loud. Modest and simple to its last detail, Stade de Bordeaux fits in the texture of the city seamlessly. Harmonising with the flat, open space of the surrounding area, and inspired by a pine forest nearby, the structure plays on the idea of openness.
The seemingly endless array of slim pillars makes the structure airy and graceful, characteristics that are not typical of stadiums usually demonstrating power. As stated by the designers, they wanted to create a building that recalls the simple elegance of the city, a goal that they managed to reach. With its geometrical clarity Stade the Bordeaux will most definitely be an outstanding location of the European Championship next year.
