Studio Spitsberg's Floating Light creates a homely ambiance
Amsterdam-based Studio Spitsberg consists of Jeroen van Leur and Thijmen van der Steen. With their exclusive design products the duo celebrates clarity and simplicity that they consider luxuries on their own. Lightness being their third watchword, their works are characterised by simple forms, clean shapes, maximum practicality, and have an easy, airy quality. All these ideas are easily traceable in their Floating Light, which is a simple yet spectacular shade for dining rooms and living spaces.
The structure consists of a basic light cord and a wooden ring covered with a stretch of thin fabric. The two are attached with wispy strings that are almost invisible from a distance, so the lamp appears as if floating - hence the name. With such visual effect, u.f.o.-connotations would be inevitable, the Spitsberg-piece, however, is very human and down-to-earth with its natural materials and understated form void of any futuristic or high-tech touches.
The textile cover of the ring is not only decorative, but it filters light, leading to a soft, homely ambiance. The Floating Light is available in a number of understated colour combinations, with the screen being black, nude, or red, with black or grey armature.
