Structure exposed in 'X-Ray Sofa' by Alain Gilles
Although it has already been pre-launched at Bon Marché in Paris, London Design Festival will see the official global premier of Alain Gilles’s latest design for French La Chance. The X-Ray Sofa will be presented during 100% Design at Design Junction, the commercial cornerstone event of LDF. As the name suggests, Gilles’s idea was to reveal the inner structure of the sofa that is otherwise carefully wrapped away from the users.
Putting the steel frame on show led to a rather architectural understanding of the structure. The exposed crossings and superposition of lines results in a constructivist-like aesthetics, which is further strengthened by the possibilities of colour combinations. The lacquered steel frame is available in a variety of hues, while the padding ensuring comfort and ergonomics can be ordered either with textile, leather, or imitation leather upholstery. To add a touch of warmth to the rather industrial outlook, the armrests are made of wood, which add further depth to the design. The graphic game of lines, materials, and colours add a further sense of playfulness of Gilles’s simply surprising take on a familiar piece.
