Luca Nichetto's customisable 'Alphabeta' shades for Hem
Although he launched his own label earlier this year, Italian designer Luca Nichetto is still open for inspiring collaborations. For Scandinavian company Hem he designed a fun, customizable set of lamps that will be presented at London Design Week later this month. The Alphabeta name covers a range of stackable shades that can be freely mixed to create custom designs. Made of spun steel, the shades comprise of two parts that are available in 8 different shapes and 24 colours. This allows for almost endless (around 1 billion) combination possibilities that customers can make up by themselves on the online order page.
Since the top and a bottom part are interchangeable, Alphabeta allows for design updates even after the shades were purchased. The lamps are sold in pairs, but they look best when many different versions are hung one after the other - and this is how Nichetto intended them to be used. He chose the name Alphabeta because when installed in a row, the cones, bowls, and tubes leave a letter-like impression, and their sequence can make up a meaningful whole.
