Gesture-inspired drinkware set by Bradley L. Bowers
Product designer Bradley L. Bowers created a sensitive drinkware set with two crucial inspirations. On the one hand, traditional clay oil lamps made a lasting impression on him during a trip to Bahrain, and he intended to recreate their smooth and organic form. On the other hand, he strived for translating the simple and everyday gesture of holding a cup into a physical form. The notions of lifting a saucer and pinching a cup were frozen into a beautiful porcelain set, looking familiar and bewildering at the same time.
Though it looks like it was the simplest thing to design, the final production was preceded by two long years of experimentation. Along with finding the right shape, material properties were also crucial in order to achieve a surface that would highlight the curvaceous characteristics of the form. Middle Kingdom Porcelain developed a special matte porcelain mixture that would do the job, and once they invented the material, they were obviously also responsible for the production of the line. Working exclusively with well-trained craftsmen, the Pinch set is an exquisite handicraft gem.
