Andrea Ponti's flatware collection inspired by dunes
Andrea Ponti is an Italian product designer who lives and works in Hong Kong, where he founded his own design studio in 2013. Coming from the country with an exceptional heritage, and creating in the futuristic far-Eastern setting is reflected in his refined yet high-tech looking collection. Precision, sharp materials, no-fuss design, and high emphasis on functionality characterise his pieces, that carry a certain, traceable background inspiration. For his Dune set, he intended to renew the concept of flatware, by harmonising it with today’s gastronomy trends. Experimental cuisine and molecular gastronomy influenced the shape, material, and functionality of his cutlery line.
Technical, artistic, and social aspects of cooking were taken into consideration during the design process. The result is a sleek, technological-looking line, featuring pieces made of aluminium. The material is extremely light and is considerably sleeker than steel and titanium usually used for flatware. The anodized finish ensures durability, while it also makes the pieces easy to clean.
When looking at the shape, it becomes obvious where the name Dune comes from: the straight handle continues in a curved transition, reminiscent of sand dunes. The curvaceous line and organic reference ease the technological aspect of the line, making Dune the perfect cutlery set for any modern kitchen.
