Pool turned into top-notch Music Hall by Chartier-Corbasson
An old sports centre was turned into a music hall in Nilvange, France by Chartier-Corbasson Architects. It was clear that once a renovation takes place, a new function has to be found for the building. Housing originally a swimming pool and all related amenities, every inch of the existing structure was made to serve musical performances. The redesigned building now includes not only a top of the line concert hall, but three recording studios as well. A bar, lobby, a reception area, a cloakroom, and several dressing rooms were also constructed.
While the interior, operating with darker hues and some vivid splashes, is intriguing enough, it is the exterior renovation that steals the show. The building is clad with a system of shiny, golden steel panels. Each piece is layered on a steel frame, and while being relatively thin, they are 30 cm in width. Their geometry was calculated by a computer algorithm, allowing for no defects. The armour-like cladding is already striking in itself, yet the skin-like reference is further enhanced by the raised portion above the entrance area. The panel construction and organic flow is also reminiscent of several instruments, while the polished finish reflects the surrounding buildings and trees, leading to a dynamic, ever-changing outlook.
