Salone del Mobile – Why does it matter?
Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano, also known as the Milan Furniture Fair around the globe is the largest design-related trade expo in the world. Contrary to its name, it’s not actually in the city of Milan, rather a little town on its outskirts, called Rho.

Rho is home to
FieraMilano, one of the largest congress centers in the world, designed by
Massimiliano Fuksas. It’s a space of stunningly large scale, with 340,000 m2 of indoor, and 60,000 m2 of outdoor space. The central passage running through the fairgrounds is more than a kilometer long, with 20 pavilions scattered along the sides.

Come April, the pavilions are filled to the brim with the wares of designers and manufacturers from all over the five continents. The Salone attracts some 1300 exhibitors and more than 300,000 visitors annually, so flowing through the passeggiata with thousands of well-dressed industry peers is just a regular day at the fair.

Alternating yearly, the furniture fair is also accompanied by either Eurocucina, the worldwide expo for kitchen-related wares, or Euroluce, the lighting exhibition. Even years are all about the kitchens, while the uneven years are illuminated by the millions of innovative lighting solutions on display.

Naturally, up-and-coming designers also have a chance to exhibit their work. The Salone Satellite, established in 1998 is the largest showcase for young designers, with 700 of them exhibiting yearly. It’s an immensely successful event, as a large number of designers who are now considered household names got their start at the Satellite. The likes of
Nendo,
Davide Groppi and
Lorenzo Damiani, to name a few.

Since its inception in 1961, Salone del Mobile has come a long way. With the constant growth the fair has experienced, spin-offs and attachments were bound to follow. Today, the whole city is part of the celebration that is Salone. Hundreds of events take place through the
Brera,
Tortona,
Lambrate and
5vie design districts as part of Fuorisalone or Milan Design Week, making Milan the design capital of the world for the week.
We will be recapping our best experiences at Fuorisalone 2015 in the coming days.
